Practical courses

Competent crew course

This 5 days course introduces the beginner to cruising and teaches personal safety, seamanship and basic helmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew on a yacht. There is no minimum  age limitation.

Day Skipper

During that 5 days course you will be taught pilotage, navigation boat handling and seamanship up to the standards required to skipper a cruising yacht mainly by day in non tidal waters. The RYA Day Skipper course will show you the difference between being crew and being the person in charge. The course introduces the problems and responsibilities of being in charge of a yacht and how to cope with common difficulties.  It is the course that most candidates ask for and  can be combined with a competent crew level course at the same time. Minimum age to award a certificate is 16.

Coastal Skipper

Advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake longer coastal passages by day and night. Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations but concentrates on night cruis-ing and handling heavy weather.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal – Exam Preparation

The aim of this demanding course is to teach the skills and techniques required to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night. Previous experience of 30 days at sea, 2 of them as a skipper covering 800 miles and at least 12 hours at night are required in order to be accepted in that course. Also a First Aid Certificate, a Sort Range Operator’s Certificate and a minimum age of 17 are required to be awarded with that qualification. An independent examiner different from your instructor will test your skills after the course Syllabus. During this course our already experienced candidates will be trained on advanced passage planning by day and night in more demanding areas and weather conditions. They have to learn how to cope with emergencies   and conduct the write crew management. The boat handling under sails or power has to be on very high standards in order to be ready to deal with any circumstances.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Preparation

The Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is internationally recognised throughout all the yachting industry. This is a minimum legal requirement for seeking work in the industry. If you want to work in charter business  as a competent and reliable skipper, do long deliveries, or are seeking crew work on mega yachts, then this is the way to prove your skills. A  Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is gained by examination, conducted by RYA Yachtmaster Examiners who are completed independent from our Training Centre. There is no syllabus prescribed for the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. The preparation course is for the very experienced sailors who already hold a SRC radio operator and a First Aid Certificate. Also 2500 miles of seamanship are required half of them in tidal waters on 50 days being at least 5 days as skipper day and night. These requirements are set in order to help you ensure that you can enjoy your preparation for the exams. The exams have a minimum duration of 8-10 hours per candidate and are really a challenge for your skills and seamanship.
